Duct Cleaning: How to Spot a Scam vs. Real Service

March 3, 2026 ยท 5 min read

You've seen the ads: "$99 whole-house duct cleaning!" or "$49 per vent!" It sounds like a great deal. But here's what they're not telling you โ€” and what you should look for instead.

Red Flags of a Duct Cleaning Scam

๐Ÿšฉ Price is too good to be true

A legitimate duct cleaning takes 3โ€“5 hours with commercial-grade equipment. That costs money. A $99 'whole house' deal is a bait-and-switch โ€” they'll upsell you once they're in your home.

๐Ÿšฉ They use a basic shop vac

Real duct cleaning requires a commercial negative air machine with HEPA filtration. If they show up with a shop vac and a brush, they're not cleaning your ducts โ€” they're stirring up debris and blowing it back into your home.

๐Ÿšฉ No before-and-after photos

If they can't show you what they found and what they removed, how do you know they did anything? We photograph every job.

๐Ÿšฉ They skip the returns and trunk lines

Many cheap services only 'clean' the supply vents โ€” the easy ones. The return air boxes and trunk lines are where the worst buildup lives.

๐Ÿšฉ They pressure you into add-ons

The $99 deal gets them in the door. Then comes the $500 'sanitizer treatment' and the $300 'biological growth remediation' that may not even be necessary.

๐Ÿšฉ No NADCA compliance

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) sets the standard for proper duct cleaning. If a company doesn't follow NADCA guidelines, they're cutting corners.

What Real Duct Cleaning Looks Like

A professional duct cleaning should include:

  • Commercial-grade negative air machine with HEPA filtration
  • Every supply vent, return, and trunk line cleaned individually
  • Rotating brush system matched to your duct type
  • Before-and-after photos at every opening
  • 3โ€“5 hours of actual work (not 45 minutes)
  • Written documentation of findings

Our Approach

At Infinity, our duct cleaning packages start at $985 โ€” because that's what it actually costs to do the job right. We use NADCA-compliant methods, negative pressure source removal, and document everything with photos. When we're done, you can see exactly what was in your ducts and exactly what we removed.
