You've seen the ads: "$99 whole-house duct cleaning!" or "$49 per vent!" It sounds like a great deal. But here's what they're not telling you — and what you should look for instead.
Red Flags of a Duct Cleaning Scam
🚩 Price is too good to be true
A legitimate duct cleaning takes 3–5 hours with commercial-grade equipment. That costs money. A $99 'whole house' deal is a bait-and-switch — they'll upsell you once they're in your home.
🚩 They use a basic shop vac
Real duct cleaning requires a commercial negative air machine with HEPA filtration. If they show up with a shop vac and a brush, they're not cleaning your ducts — they're stirring up debris and blowing it back into your home.
🚩 No before-and-after photos
If they can't show you what they found and what they removed, how do you know they did anything? We photograph every job.
🚩 They skip the returns and trunk lines
Many cheap services only 'clean' the supply vents — the easy ones. The return air boxes and trunk lines are where the worst buildup lives.
🚩 They pressure you into add-ons
The $99 deal gets them in the door. Then comes the $500 'sanitizer treatment' and the $300 'biological growth remediation' that may not even be necessary.
🚩 No NADCA compliance
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) sets the standard for proper duct cleaning. If a company doesn't follow NADCA guidelines, they're cutting corners.
