When Should You Replace Your AC System in Florida?
May 5, 2026 ยท 5 min read
In Southwest Florida, your AC system works harder than almost anywhere else in the country. Between the relentless heat, extreme humidity, and salt air along the Gulf Coast, a system that might last 20 years up north often reaches the end of its useful life in 10โ15 years here.
So how do you know when it's time to stop repairing and start replacing? Here are the factors we look at โ the same ones we use when advising our own customers.
The 50% Rule
If the cost of a repair exceeds 50% of what a new system would cost, replacement usually makes more financial sense โ especially if your system is over 10 years old. A $1,500 compressor repair on a 13-year-old system is money you'll never get back, because something else will likely fail within the next year or two.
Age Matters โ But It's Not Everything
Age alone doesn't determine whether you should replace. We've seen well-maintained 15-year-old systems that still perform beautifully, and neglected 8-year-old systems that are falling apart. What matters is the measured condition of the system โ static pressure, refrigerant charge, electrical component health, and airflow.
That said, once a system hits 12โ15 years in Florida, the probability of major component failures increases dramatically. The compressor, evaporator coil, and condenser coil are all on borrowed time.
R-22 Refrigerant = Replace
If your system uses R-22 (Freon), which was phased out in 2020, replacement is almost always the right call. R-22 now costs $100+ per pound, and any system using it is at least 14 years old. A single refrigerant leak can cost $2,000โ$5,000 to repair โ money that would be better spent toward a new system with a 10-year warranty.
Rising Energy Bills
A system that's losing efficiency runs longer to achieve the same result, driving up your electric bill. If your bills have been climbing steadily without a change in usage, your system may be working harder than it should. A new high-efficiency system can cut cooling costs by 20โ40%.
Comfort Problems
If your home feels humid even when the AC is running, or some rooms are always hotter than others, your system may be oversized, undersized, or simply worn out. Modern variable-speed systems handle Florida's humidity far better than the single-stage systems installed in most homes 10+ years ago.
Our Approach
We never pressure anyone into a replacement. We measure your system's actual condition with instruments โ not opinions โ and give you honest Good, Better, and Best options. If a $400 repair will buy you 3โ5 more years of reliable service, we'll tell you that. If the numbers say replacement is the smarter financial decision, we'll show you why.
