How to Measure Your AC Filter
Getting the right filter starts with knowing your size. The easiest way is to pull out your current filter and look at the numbers printed on the frame — you'll see three numbers like 20x20x1 or 16x25x4. The first two numbers are the length and width (in inches), and the third number is the depth or thickness. Understanding MERV Ratings
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — it's a scale from 1 to 20 that tells you how well a filter catches particles from the air. The higher the MERV number, the smaller the particles it can trap. For most residential AC systems in Florida, a MERV rating between 8 and 13 hits the sweet spot: strong filtration without restricting the airflow your system needs to run properly.
A word of caution — higher isn't always better. Filters rated MERV 14 and above (like hospital-grade HEPA filters) are so dense that most home AC systems can't pull enough air through them. This creates the same problem as a dirty filter: restricted airflow, higher energy bills, and extra wear on your equipment. Why a Higher MERV Rating Can Actually Hurt Your System
It's natural to think “the higher the rating, the better” — but with AC filters, that's not how it works. Every AC system is designed to move a specific amount of air. The blower motor, ductwork, and coil all work together based on that airflow. When you install a filter with a MERV rating that's too high for your system, the filter material is so tightly woven that it restricts the air your system needs to operate.
Think of it like breathing through a thick blanket — your lungs have to work much harder to pull air in, and you still don't get enough. That's exactly what happens to your AC. The blower motor strains to pull air through the dense filter, static pressure builds up inside the ductwork, and less conditioned air reaches your rooms. The result? Your home doesn't cool properly, your energy bills go up, and over time you can burn out the blower motor or freeze the evaporator coil.
Not every system can handle the same MERV rating. A newer, high-efficiency system with a variable-speed blower might handle a MERV 13 just fine. But an older system with a single-speed motor and undersized ductwork might struggle with anything above a MERV 8. It depends on your specific equipment, your duct design, and how much airflow your system was built to deliver.

Basic Protection

Most residential AC systems are not designed for this level of filtration — the filter material is so dense that it chokes off airflow, causing your system to work overtime and potentially leading to frozen coils, blower motor failure, and costly repairs.
