The Florida Humidity Guide
Why your home feels sticky, what it's doing to your health and house, and exactly how to fix it โ explained in plain English.
What Is Humidity?
Humidity is simply the amount of water vapor floating in the air. You can't see it, but you can absolutely feel it โ that heavy, sticky, "why is it 75ยฐF but I'm still sweating" feeling is humidity at work.
Think of the air like a sponge. Warm air holds more moisture than cool air. Florida's heat means the air is constantly soaking up water from the ocean, the ground, and every rain shower โ and then bringing it right into your home.
๐ก๏ธ Relative humidity (RH%) is the number you'll see on a thermostat or hygrometer. It tells you how full that "sponge" is โ 100% means the air is completely saturated and moisture starts condensing on surfaces.
The Ideal Range: 30โ50% RH
Most experts agree the sweet spot for indoor humidity is between 30% and 50%. In that range, your home feels comfortable, your AC runs efficiently, and biological growth has a hard time taking hold.
- โข Dry skin & irritated sinuses
- โข Static electricity
- โข Wood furniture cracks
- โข Comfortable & healthy
- โข AC runs efficiently
- โข Biological growth can't easily take hold
- โข Biological growth risk
- โข Dust mites thrive
- โข Structural damage over time
Florida reality check: During summer, outdoor humidity regularly hits 80โ95%. Without active humidity control inside your home, indoor levels can easily creep above 60% โ even with the AC running.
Why High Humidity Is a Big Deal
Your Comfort
High humidity makes 75ยฐF feel like 85ยฐF. Your body cools itself by sweating โ but when the air is already saturated with moisture, sweat can't evaporate. You feel hot and sticky even when the thermostat says otherwise.
Your Health
Humidity above 60% creates perfect conditions for biological growth, dust mites, and bacteria. These are major triggers for asthma, allergies, and respiratory infections โ especially in children and the elderly.
Your Home's Structure
Wood absorbs moisture. Over time, high humidity causes wood floors to warp, door frames to swell, drywall to soften, and paint to peel. What starts as a comfort issue becomes a costly repair issue.
Your Belongings
Books, photos, electronics, clothing, and furniture all suffer in high humidity. Organic growth can develop on fabric and paper within 24โ48 hours if conditions are right.
Your AC System
Your air conditioner removes some humidity as a byproduct of cooling โ but it wasn't designed to be a dehumidifier. When humidity is high, your AC works harder, runs longer, and wears out faster.
