Why Your Home Feels Humid Even With the AC Running

April 28, 2026 ยท 4 min read

You set the thermostat to 74ยฐF. The AC is running. The temperature reads 74ยฐF. But your home still feels sticky, clammy, and uncomfortable. Sound familiar?

You're not imagining it. The problem isn't temperature โ€” it's humidity. And in Florida, it's one of the most common comfort complaints we hear.

Your AC Wasn't Designed to Be a Dehumidifier

Your air conditioner removes some moisture from the air as a byproduct of cooling โ€” but it was never designed to be a full-time dehumidifier. In Southwest Florida, where outdoor humidity regularly hits 80โ€“95%, your AC simply can't remove moisture fast enough to keep indoor levels below 60%.

The Oversized System Problem

One of the most common causes of high indoor humidity is an oversized AC system. When a system is too large for your home, it cools the air quickly and shuts off โ€” before it has time to remove moisture. This is called short-cycling, and it's a major comfort killer in Florida.

An oversized system might hit your setpoint temperature fast, but your home will feel sticky and uncomfortable because the humidity never drops below 60%.

The Fix: Whole-Home Dehumidification

The most effective solution is a dedicated whole-home dehumidifier that works alongside your AC system. It connects to your existing ductwork and actively pulls moisture out of the air โ€” even when the AC isn't running.

We also recommend variable-speed systems for new installations. They run longer at lower speeds, which removes significantly more moisture than a single-stage system that blasts cold air and shuts off.

What We Measure

On every service call, we measure your indoor relative humidity with a hygrometer. The ideal range is 30โ€“50% RH. Above 60% is a problem โ€” for your comfort, your health, and your home's structure. We don't guess whether you have a humidity problem. We measure it.
